Visit us at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show 2017

The RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show is the only show in the world dedicated exclusively to dinghy sailing. Taking place at Alexandra Palace, London over the weekend of 04-05 March 2017, the show features a packed schedule of talks and coaching sessions, and One Wild Ride will be there!

The boat and I will be on the Suzuki Main Stage. I'll tell you what drove me to singlehandedly sail my 13ft Laser Dinghy around Ireland’s unforgiving and exposed coastline, with engaging anecdotes, photos and never-before-seen video of the journey to the finish line.

For the Record

Embarking on a trip like this naturally generates chatter and talk about records. Our reality at One Wild Ride HQ is very different. We always had a very different set of objectives.

BoatFirst and foremost the circumnavigation is obviously in aid of ChildVision and I’m hopeful that the sight of me hurting off the coast somewhere will be enough for some to put hands in pockets for what is a great cause. With any luck we’ll also showcase sailing as a sport, providing sailors, sailing clubs and new recruits a platform through which they can enjoy sailing. Better still an opportunity to connect around a common cause. Through words, pictures, video and maybe even a song or two we’ll also share insights into our coastline heritage, and in the spirit of adventure, hopefully encourage others to challenge themselves, grow, meet new people, make new connections and explore.

It will, if we make it home, be a great achievement. It won’t be a first this or that, a name on a trophy or stuff of folklore. And that’s the thing. Sometimes those things pale in comparison to the sheer enjoyment of just doing it. Putting yourself out there. Emptying the tank.

Is the kettle waterproof?

ForecastIt’s been raining for 2 solid days. The kinda rain that even makes a sailor frown. Wetter than getting wet. Miserable. Cold. Just plain ugh. Oh and mildly windy. Well, gale force. It’s enough to make me visualise a couple of heated seats custom fit to the deck on the commute this morning. A kettle, maybe? Waterproof of course.

Pipe dreams aside the weather banging on the windows is a reminder that this trip won’t be easy, but equally as I’m the internal optimist, a reminder to enjoy the good days when they come. Remember that feeling of the sun on my face. That feeling of being free. And hell or high water freedom will come soon enough.
